The cycle of Creating

Creating answers the question: what can I do?

Its three moves — Map, Move, Make — constitute the grammar of creating. You map environment to produce domains. You move energy to produce progress. You make efforts to produce changes. This is how we navigate the world and bring new things into being.

The stance is moderate ego-control. You are still the agent, but now the world is not just an object of knowledge — it is a terrain you must respect and work with. You move through it, not just upon it.

Map Environment → Domains

The first move. You map the environment — and the deliverable is domains. Where Measure in Learning is analytical (what differences exist?), Map in Creating is navigational (what is the environment I’m moving through?).

The map carves the broad environment into bounded domains: where am I? Where do I want to go? What paths connect them? What obstacles lie between?

This is not the same as modelling. A model explains how things work. A map shows where things are relative to your purposes. You can have a perfect map of a city without understanding its economics, history, or social dynamics. You can also have a deep model of urban systems without knowing which street leads to the bakery.

Mapping is pragmatic. It is oriented by a destination, even if that destination is vague. The question is not “what is true?” but “what do I need to know to get there?” You survey the environment and produce a domain — a bounded space you can operate in.

James Scott’s distinction between metis (practical knowledge) and techne (abstract knowledge) captures this. Learning is techne — general, transferable, codifiable. Creating’s mapping is metis — local, contextual, embodied. The farmer knows this field, not fields in general.

Move Energy → Progress

The second move. You move energy — time, attention, effort — and the deliverable is progress. Navigation with direction.

You have a domain. You have a destination. Now you deploy energy to cross the distance.

Move acknowledges something Learning often misses: not all progress comes from understanding first. Sometimes you learn by going. The territory reveals itself through motion. You discover obstacles, shortcuts, and features that no map could have shown you.

This is not blind action. It is directed movement that expects to learn as it goes. The sailor tacking against the wind is not following a pre-computed path — they are responding to conditions as they emerge, adjusting course continuously.

Move is the bridge between understanding and creation. In Learning, you might know everything about the terrain and never set foot in it. In Creating, you traverse it. The traversal changes both you and your understanding. Energy in, progress out.

Make Efforts → Changes

The third move. You make efforts — and the deliverable is changes. You produce something tangible.

Making is creation through directed effort. You know what you want. You have a domain. You have made progress. Now you apply effort to produce the change you’re trying to make.

This is the stance of craft. The carpenter makes a table. The entrepreneur makes a company. The cook makes a meal. The result is something that did not exist before — brought into being through skill, effort, and material engagement.

Making differs from Learning’s manipulation. Manipulation probes variables to produce control; making applies efforts to produce changes. The scientist manipulates to learn; the craftsperson makes to create.

The cycle of Creating is complete when something new exists. Not a new idea (that’s still Learning), but a new thing — a change in the world that you can point to. Domains, progress, changes: the outputs of creating.

The stance

The cycle of Creating is the stance of craft, entrepreneurship, and practical action. It is what we mean when we say someone “gets things done.”

The strengths:

  • Results: actual changes in the world, not just predictions about it
  • Learning through doing: knowledge that comes from moving energy through domains
  • Responsiveness: adapting to conditions as they emerge

The limitations:

  • Can become disconnected from understanding (pragmatic tunnel vision)
  • May miss deeper patterns that require Learning’s analysis
  • Effort can substitute for wisdom

Creating is not inferior to Learning. It is a different mode with its own grammar and its own criteria for success.

The stall point

The symptoms: “Just do something.” “We don’t have time to think about this, we need to ship.” “Analysis is the enemy of action.” Movement continues; reflection disappears. Or making happens, but without the mapping — you build without knowing where you are or where you’re going.

This is Creating eating itself. Action accelerates; wisdom atrophies. You produce results, but they may be the wrong results. You move fast in the wrong direction.

The exit from a Creating stall is often stepping back to Learning (actually understand what’s happening) or forward to Becoming (stop forcing, start allowing).

Creating is older than Learning. Life was navigating and making long before it was theorizing. The single cell maps chemical gradients, moves toward nutrients, and makes copies of itself — all without a model of chemistry.
